Linear roadmaps are a lie

Roadmaps are a common sight in meetings. They are usually linear. They are, at their best optimistic guesses, and at their worst lies.

They might say that no, this one’s not optimistic, in fact there is a lot of buffer. This is not what I mean. This is still optimistic in that we assume we know the progression of the work without doubt irrespective of the times allotted. This optimism is rarely warranted in a complex (Complexity) world where Reality has a suprising amount of detail.
