Identifying the Centre of Gravity

Related to schwerpunkt (The five elements of an organization that can exploit OODA loops) are centers of gravity in an engagement.

Dale Eikmeier has the following method to identify the COG.

Map out the system (Systems), with its RAFT (relationships, actors, functions, tensions) which can be thought of as the edges, nodes, types of relationships, and characterization of relationship (eg +ve, -ve, supporting etc).

Then identify the Ends, Ways, and Means.

Ends is the goal/objective.

Ways are verbs. They are the critical capabilities.

Means are the critical requirements who posses the critical capabilities to achieve the Ends. Nouns. This is the COG.

Go back to the systems diagram to examine the relationships of the COG, classify things, and identify the critical vulnerabilities.
