Equality and freedom are opposed

This is one of the lessons from Will and Ariel Durant’s Lessons of History.

We can’t have both at once because we aren’t equal. We have different abilities, and even with full freedom, will produce unequal outcomes.

The best we can do is to have legal, political, educational apparatuses that provide equal opportunities to everyone.
